John Sterling Retires After 35-Year Run As Yankees Radio Voice

Legendary Broadcaster Calls Final Game On September 25th

John Sterling, the iconic radio voice of the New York Yankees for more than three decades, has announced his retirement. The Athletic first reported the news on September 26th, 2022.

A Hall of Fame Career

Sterling began his Yankees broadcasting career in 1989 and quickly became a fan favorite. He is best known for his signature home run calls, including the iconic "It is high, it is far, it is gone!" Sterling's colorful commentary and passion for the Yankees made him one of the most recognizable voices in sports.

Over the course of his career, Sterling called 5,420 regular season games and 211 postseason games for the Yankees. He was also the play-by-play announcer for the Baltimore Orioles from 1977 to 1981.

Sterling's retirement marks the end of an era for Yankees fans. He will be remembered as one of the greatest broadcasters in team history.
