Dengue Fever Cases Surge in Mexico

Urgent Health Alert for Visitors

WEB Quintana Roo has seen a sharp rise in confirmed dengue cases, with 20 reported in the first half of 2024 alone.

Tourists are advised to take precautions to avoid infection as dengue fever poses a significant health threat in Mexico. Dengue is a mosquito-borne disease that can cause severe flu-like symptoms, including fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, and nausea. In severe cases, dengue can lead to life-threatening complications.

The increase in dengue cases is a cause for concern, as dengue fever is not a new disease in Mexico. It is considered a year-round nationwide threat, with the most cases reported during the rainy season from May to November. The surge in cases in Quintana Roo suggests that the virus may be spreading more aggressively than usual.

For tourists visiting Cancun and other coastal areas of Mexico, it is essential to take steps to avoid being infected with dengue fever. These steps include:

  • Using mosquito repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or IR3535
  • Wearing long sleeves and pants when outdoors
  • Staying in air-conditioned or screened-in areas
  • Avoiding contact with standing water, where mosquitoes breed
