Solar Storm Deutschland

Geomagnetic Storm Expected to Hit Earth This Weekend

Update 7:27 PM PDT May 10, 2024

A dramatic blast from the sun set off a geomagnetic storm in Earth's atmosphere on Friday that is expected to continue into the weekend.

The solar storm is the result of a coronal mass ejection (CME) from the sun that occurred on Thursday. The CME is a large cloud of charged particles that is traveling toward Earth at high speed. When the CME hits Earth's magnetic field, it can cause a geomagnetic storm.

Geomagnetic storms can disrupt a variety of technologies, including satellites, power grids, and communication systems. They can also cause the aurora borealis, or northern lights, to be visible at lower latitudes than usual.

The current geomagnetic storm is expected to be moderate to strong. It is likely to cause some disruption to satellites and power grids, but it is not expected to cause widespread blackouts.

The aurora borealis is expected to be visible in the northern United States and Canada this weekend. If the storm is strong enough, the aurora may also be visible in the southern United States.
