Multiple Casualties Reported, Emergency Services on Scene

16 Injured, Four Seriously, After Morning Blast

Leverkusen, Germany - A devastating explosion tore through a chemical park in Leverkusen on the morning of July 27, 2021. Initial reports from local news outlet 24rheinde indicate that at least 16 people were injured, four of them critically.

The incident occurred shortly before 09:40 local time (07:40 GMT) at the Currenta Disposal Center, located north of Leverkusen's city center and the Chempark industrial complex. The powerful blast sent shockwaves felt as far as 40 kilometers away at a seismic station in Hespertal.

Bayer, one of Germany's largest chemical manufacturers, has its headquarters in Leverkusen. The city, home to approximately 163,000 residents, lies 20 kilometers (124 miles) north of Cologne.

The cause of the explosion is still under investigation. Emergency services, including firefighters, police, and medical personnel, are currently on the scene and attending to the victims.
